Why the developing world matters

If we want to think about the world and not just about our corner of it, let's start reaching out to the developing world alongside our activities in the UK.

As chairman of ecosurety, I think becoming more resource efficient matters. But why exactly? Not just to hit a target set by a government. It matters for the long-term sustainability of the planet.

At ecosurety our mission every day is to deliver real change that makes a difference. We aren't just here to turn a profit by displacing someone else in a marketplace; we demand much more of ourselves and set our sights high. That includes thinking and engaging globally.

In the UK, recycling rates are climbing, but the benefit to everyone is a bit abstract. So how to make the challenge and the target we are aiming for more real? Here's one way.

In many parts of the developing world, waste is a problem that is tangible and destructive. It damages the environment and affects lives – directly.

Whatever is going on in Europe with recycling – Germany at 65% recycling, the UK at 44%, and so on – the stark fact is that in many countries recycling is barely happening. That means resources are being lost on a vast scale, and the waste that's scattered all around is a huge issue with devastating consequences for some.

One way is to face this issue head on is to engage directly with the businesses and social enterprises that are out there looking to make a difference. It's something we are exploring at ecosurety and soon hope to formalise into partnerships and funding to deliver change on the ground, right where it's needed.

Immediately we've lined up the detail we'll set out a programme and get others – our member customers, for one – involved. It's an important step and one we can't wait to make.

Non-Executive Director

Steve established Ecosurety in 2003 in response to the lack of flexibility, innovation and customer-focus in the compliance scheme market. He took inspiration from the mobile phone market, which continues to provide a diverse range of pick-and-mix options for the customer, and built the original business on a commitment to provide flexible, friendly and tailored support for all clients.

He is passionate about bringing the latest business concepts from other markets and industries and applying them to the environmental sector for the benefit of clients.
