PackUK publishes RAM roadmap outlining developments to 2030

The Recyclability Assessment Methodology (RAM) roadmap outlines how it will evolve to support the UK’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for packaging.

The roadmap has a particular focus on improving recyclability assessments and aligning policy across the four nations. Published on 1 October 2025, it confirms various planned future updates to the RAM, including:

• Annual policy alignment reviews to ensure consistency with national waste and resources strategies
• Scheduled RAM publications, with updates now planned for July each year, starting with RAM 2027
• Key material guidance updates, including reviews of flexible and rigid plastics, glass, paper and board, and emerging materials such as bioplastics and compostables
• Quarterly Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) meetings, providing a forum for industry engagement and technical input

Notably, the roadmap includes a “stand still” period for RAM changes in 2025 and 2026, giving producers additional time to adapt to the requirements of RAM v1.1.

The publication is a welcome indicator of how and when producers should expect changes to the methodology, which is central to the modulation of EPR fees.
