4. Prioritise where to start

Many packaging formats will need extra data from suppliers. If you have hundreds of SKUs, focus first on your top 10–20% by sales volume as they likely represent most of your packaging tonnage. Unassessed packaging defaults to Red, attracting the highest fee, so prioritise high-volume and top-selling products!

5. Contact suppliers now

Once you know which packaging needs data and which suppliers to contact, don't delay. Responses can take time and may require follow-ups, so don’t wait — even contacting a few at a time helps.

6. Request full specifications

Request full packaging specifications from suppliers, not just yes/no answers about a specific technical detail in the RAM. This ensures you can recheck against future RAM updates as it’s revised annually, and that you have enough evidence to justify your reporting. Just make sure you confirm that the specs include all details required for RAM.

7. Understand where and when you can improve packaging

8. Embed RAM in your design and procurement processes

Prevent poor ratings by training your design team on RAM, particularly what materials, formats, and features to avoid. We can provide training if needed. Also, have your procurement team require full RAM-ready packaging specs in purchasing and supplier contracts to ensure future compliance without extra effort.
