The Circular Economy Package - David Burton comments in CIWM Journal

The Chartered Institute of Wastes Management (CIWM) has published an article by David Burton, Policy Director of ecosurety, in response to the European Commission’s release of the Circular Economy Package.

The Circular Economy Package includes increased recycling targets for municipal and packaging waste, landfill targets and measures to promote re-use and greener products. You can find out more about the Circular Economy Package, including links to the European Commission Action Plan, in our previous news story here.

Key messages explored

David’s key messages in the article relate to:

  • the dangers of legislative-led supply ‘push’ of recyclates without support for market demand

  • the role that Producer Compliance Schemes can perform in harnessing collective action

  • the importance of initiatives such as ecosurety’s efforts to 'close the loop'

  • supporting innovation within the recycling sector

The article is published in the January edition of the CIWM Journal and is CPD approved, meaning that it contributes towards Continuing Professional Development in the waste management sector.
