The UK’s biggest collaborative approach to recycling on-the-go

Where it began

On-the-go waste continues to be a significant problem for authorities across the country. Every year in the UK we use an estimated total of 25 billion plastic bottles, cans, and coffee cups. Of these around 11 billion don’t get recycled, meaning they go to waste - that works out at about 8,000 every minute. When you factor in that over half of people dispose of their waste on-the-go, it all adds up to one big problem. A significant proportion of cities don’t have on-the-go recycling facilities and even those that do, often suffer from high contamination rates that make recycling the collected material problematic. In 2018, Ecosurety joined forces with environmental charity Hubbub to launch the #LeedsBy Example campaign. The campaign brought together an unprecedented coalition of major brands, recyclers, local businesses, and local authorities to tackle the significant problem of food and drink packaging disposed of on-the-go.

#LeedsByExample made a big splash in the city of Leeds, proving that with improved communications and better infrastructure it was possible to double the number of people recycling whilst reducing contamination. So successful was #LeedsByExample, that it resulted in subsequent on-the-go recycling campaigns being launched in cities across the UK under the banner of #InTheLoop.

Closing the loop on #InTheLoop

We teamed up with Hubbub once again in October 2022 to bring the hugely successful #InTheLoop initiative across the finishing line, with the launch of a new open-source toolkit. The #InTheLoop toolkit is an in-depth guide to local authorities on how to roll out a successful recycling on-the-go campaign and thereby increase recycling rates and reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill or incineration. The toolkit, launched at the LARAC conference in Birmingham and funded by Ecosurety, brings together key learnings and insights gathered from #InTheLoop, the UK’s biggest collaborative approach to boost recycling on-the-go.
